There are programs offered in or near Lenapah that cater to both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications that are dispensed in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, which means the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will instead not become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be prescribed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at a high dosage, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are generally limited beyond managing the medication and the main treatment goal is to handle the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do provide a small amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is encouraged.
