Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Leon, OK.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Leon that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
