American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to need treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native drug and alcohol treatment admissions arrive to rehab as criminal justice clients, meaning they have very likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail time.
