American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to require recovery services for drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Reversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to rehab as criminal justice clients, which means they have very likely agreed to a court ordered diversion program to go to rehab instead of jail time. So therefore, there is an absolute need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various needs of American Indian or Alaska Natives, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
