Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Vera, OK.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who intends to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Vera that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
