Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Weatherford, OK.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Weatherford that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
