American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. On the Contrary, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more prone to feel the need to seek treatment than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native addiction treatment admissions arrive to treatment as criminal justice clients, meaning they have most likely accepted a court ordered diversion program to receive treatment instead of jail times for their charges.
