Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Huntington, OR.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Huntington which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
