Crisis Intervention Team - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Ontario, OR.

A crisis situation, such as someone experiencing the destructive repercussions of a mental health disability like a drug or alcohol addiction, calls for an intervention directed by professionals who can make sure they accept the help they need before it's too late. A Crisis Intervention Team in Ontario is a form of community monitoring which calls upon and utilizes healthcare, law enforcement and other concerned agencies as well as family members to assist individuals in crisis. This starts with the training and education of law enforcement officers, healthcare providers, and other contributing team members in the community so they learn how to react and effectively work together during such a crisis. There are training programs offered to educate law enforcement officers and 911 emergency operators for example, which involves 40 hours of training in supporting the mental health professionals they will be working with during the crisis intervention, refining verbal de-escalation skills so that they can approach and resolve the crisis without it becoming a potentially dangerous or hostile episode, etc.

In many instances, Crisis Intervention Teams are used as a means of jail diversion. Meaning, being able to appropriately respond to the incident as a mental health disturbance and not a crime helps keep individuals with mental health disorders out of jail and where they should be, in a hospital or treatment setting receiving help. This also keeps people with mental health disorders out of prison where they do not have access to adequate mental health therapy and resources to properly address their disorder, such as a substance abuse disorder. Rather than in jail, individuals in crisis can receive behavioral therapies, counseling, medication and other mental health services to rehabilitate them. This not only benefits the individual in crisis, but also the entire community because it costs more to keep someone with a mental health disorder in prison than it does to properly treat them in a mental health program.
