American Indians and Alaska Natives are historically more likely than individuals of other racial and ethnic groups to be in need to treatment for substance abuse and addiction. Conversely, American Indians and Alaska Natives are also more likely to seek treatment on their own will more than other racial/ethnic groups. Almost 50% of American Indian and Alaska Native substance abuse treatment admissions show up to treatment as criminal justice clients, which means they have most likely accepted a diversion option to go to treatment in lieu of jail times for their charges. So as one can see, there is a definite need for a variety of service types to provide services for all of the various requirements of this client demographic, including substance abuse treatment programs in native languages.
One of the barriers that American Indian and Alaska Natives in Rainier face is access to comprehensive treatment facilities, particularly those who live in secluded regions. Facilities offering substance abuse rehabilitation services in rural regions commonly are not able to offer support aimed at meeting the needs and demands of this unique demographic including addiction treatment services in their language. American Indian and Alaska Native individuals can consult with elders and stakeholders involved in mental health services for their region or tribe to find out which types of treatment services are available to them through which treatment facilities, and which ones will work best for their particular situation. There have been many grants offered in recent years to cover these types of treatment services for American and Alaska Native clients, that have very effective treatment programs which provide evidence based treatment that also incorporates culturally sensitive rehab services including those in their language which are performed by bi-lingual treatment staff, medical staff, etc.
