The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard provides insurance benefits for retirees of the military who are 60 or older and their eligible family members. With Tricare Standard they receive services from any non-military health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay yearly deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which allows access to civilian health care providers within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary care physician and obtain referrals to health care services that offer specialty care.
Through TRICARE, military members can acquire drug and alcohol rehabilitation services in Sandy. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other treatment services. They will need pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance covers both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detoxification are restricted to 7 days. An inpatient or partial hospitalization following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military insurance carriers are allowed to stay in treatment. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is usually allowed. In additional to this, there are 15 family therapy sessions and 60 group therapy sessions covered per benefit period, which take place on an outpatient basis.
