Clients referred from the court for substance abuse treatment are most commonly referred because they are being given a chance to receive treatment rather than face jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is most common with first time offenders, it can happen at any point such as while the person is being held in jail. There are various types of programs that criminal justice clients may be referred to, and this all depends on what is local to Beyer and the type of substance the person requires treatment for.
There are treatment programs that work directly with the courts to treat this explicit group of clientele, and are typically state or federally funded or are available at little or no cost to the client. There are also private drug and alcohol treatment centers that might be authorized by the court if there is a specific type of rehab that the client requires or wants that a different facility can't fulfill. The defendant's attorney can push for such alternatives to the judge for acceptance. There are even substance abuse treatment facilities that provide services from the jails and prisons themselves, whereas clients are sometimes in a better position for reduced sentences or other benefits when participating in drug rehabilitation services while serving their sentence for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
