The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of health efforts to promote the behavioral health of the nation. One of its duties is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs who offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid addiction and dependency. Medications given are drugs such as methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that help withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid addicted individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation programs in New Columbia are programs that are legally allowed to give out the drugs used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary benefits in addition to medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, they need to get re-certified every year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
