Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Paxinos, PA.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who intends to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Paxinos that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
