Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Ulster, PA.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Ulster which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist just like heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors which make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are heavily controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications regularly so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dose which isn't at the same time making them feel high. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more significantly with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to treat the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some centers do provide a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as auxiliary services, and this is encouraged.
