Treatment clients referred from the court for drug or alcohol treatment are typically referred because they are being granted a chance to receive treatment rather than face jail time, other charges, fines, etc. While this is more prevalent with first time offenders, it can be offered at any point including while the person is being held in jail. There are various types of facilities that criminal justice clients can be referred to, and this depends on what is available in Unity House and the type of issues they'll need treatment for.
There are rehab facilities that work directly with the criminal justice court system to treat this specific group of clientele, and are usually state funded or are available at no cost or very little cost to the client. There are also private substance abuse rehabilitation centers that can be authorized by the court if there is a specific type of rehab that the client requires or wants that a different facility can't provide. The defendant's attorney can request such options to the judge for approval. There are even drug rehabilitation facilities that provide services from the correctional facilities themselves, in which case clients are sometimes in a better position for early release or other benefits when enrolling in addiction rehab services while serving their sentence for a drug offense or a DUI/DWI.
