Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - West Finley, PA.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in West Finley which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug-free life you want.
