Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Chepachet, RI.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get through injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a treatment program in Chepachet which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
