Methadone and Buprenorphine Clients Only - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Westerly, RI.

There are substance abuse programs offered in or near Westerly which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are used in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same nerve cell receptors that cause an individual to feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid dependent client will instead no longer engage in drug seeking behavior and won't have withdrawal symptoms. There are risks of drug interactions, side effects, and even overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are highly controlled and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.

Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but ideally at a dosage which isn't also causing them to feel high. Euphoria is possible at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At centers which treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond this and the primary treatment objective is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some centers do offer a small amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
