The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the United States. One of its duties is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are programs which offer medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine administered are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation facilities in Central are programs that are legally allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT being they remain certified and continue to meet certain requirements. A requirement that MAT individuals must also receive ancillary benefits aside from medicine such as psychotherapy, behavioral therapy or counseling.

An opioid rehab center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid treatment facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every three years contingent upon the type of certification it has been granted.
