Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Edisto Island, SC.

Vivitrol is a med used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of a week if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Edisto Island which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
