Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - Lobeco, SC.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a treatment program in Lobeco which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
