The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of efforts to promote the behavioral health of the U.S.. One of its responsibilities is the oversight of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to clients who are experiencing opioid addiction and dependency. Drug given are drugs like buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which help curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted clients. SAMSHA certified opioid rehabilitation centers in Parris Island are programs that are officially allowed to distribute the drugs used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also receive auxiliary services in addition to medication such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment program can get their basic certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid treatment programs authorized by SAMSHA need to get licensed also by their own state. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA office. Once an opioid rehab program is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
