Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Programs - UNA, SC.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual injects Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days if they want to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in UNA which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
