Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Facilities - Wedgefield, SC.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through injection once a month. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Wedgefield that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
