The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government agency in charge of efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the administering of opioid rehabilitation facilities, which are programs which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine given are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment facilities in Andover are programs who are officially permitted to dispense the medicines used in MAT being they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. One of these requirements is that MAT individuals must also get auxiliary services in addition to medicine such as counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid rehab center can get their initial certification while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the kind of certification it has been given.
