The military currently uses a military insurance known as Tricare to help veterans, active military members and their families receive health benefits. There is Tricare Prime, Tricare Standard, and Tricare Extra. Tricare Standard offers benefits for retired military who are 60 years of age or older and their qualified family members. With Tricare Standard they go to any civilian health care provider that is payable under Tricare, but also pay an annual deductible and coinsurance, as well as any out-of-pocket expenses. Tricare Extra is an option available to Tricare Standard beneficiaries which grants access to civilian health care professionals within their provider network, with a discounted coinsurance amount. Tricare Prime is available to all active-duty members, retirees, and all qualified family members, and with this they can choose a primary doctor and get referrals to organizations that provide specialty care.

Through TRICARE, military members can obtain substance abuse treatment services in Howard. This includes detoxification, individual and group therapy including family therapy, and other various rehab services. They will require pre-authorization for treatment and there are likely to be some restrictions. Military insurance pays for both outpatient and inpatient, but stays for detox are limited to 7 days. Partial hospitalization or impatient treatment following detoxification will only be authorized if it is an approved treatment center, and there are time restrictions as to how long military members are allowed to remain in rehab. A 3-week inpatient stay per benefit period is commonly accepted.
