The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department in charge of health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the United States. One of its obligations is the supervision of opioid treatment programs, which are programs who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are experiencing opioid dependency and addiction. Medications administered are drugs like methadone, buprenorphine and other drugs that stop withdrawal and curb cravings for opioid dependent individuals. SAMSHA certified opioid treatment programs in Java are programs which are officially allowed to distribute the medicines used in MAT as long as they maintain their certification and continue to meet certain requirements. An opioid rehabilitation facility can get their basic approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, however, are required to get their full accreditation in a year. Opioid rehab programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they need to list themselves with the Drug Enforcement Administration via a local DEA branch. Once an opioid rehab program is certified, they need to get re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of accreditation that was granted.
