One of its responsibilities is the administering of opioid rehab facilities, which are centers who provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to people who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. A requirement that MAT clients must also receive ancillary services in addition to medication like counseling or behavioral therapy.

An opioid treatment center can get their initial certification while they endeavor to get their full accreditation, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation programs accredited by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. Likewise, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA branch. Once an opioid treatment facility is approved to operate, it must be re-certified each year or every three years depending on the type of certification that was granted.
