The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, "SAMHSA" for short, is the government department responsible for efforts to promote the mental health of the United States. One of its duties is the administering of opioid treatment facilities, which are centers which provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) to individuals who are in the midst of opioid dependency and addiction. Medicine administered are drugs such as buprenorphine, methadone, and other drugs which stop curb cravings and withdrawal for opioid addicted clients. An opioid rehab center can receive initial approval documentation while working towards becoming fully accredited, but must become fully accredited within a year. Opioid rehabilitation facilities authorized by SAMSHA must be licensed by the state in which they operate. In addition, they must register with the Drug Enforcement Administration through a local DEA office. Once an opioid treatment center is certified, it must be re-certified every year or every 3 years depending on the type of certification it has been given.
