One of the out-patient treatment options for individuals in Burns who are battling with opioid abuse and addiction is opioid maintenance therapy. Some clinics and doctors are certified to administer certain medications to opioid dependent individuals, many that are opioid-based also and are habit forming. In low enough amounts however, the user doesn't experience high feelings and also doesn't experience acute cravings and isn't in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first drug tried for this purpose, but there are alternative options currently to select from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an out-patient medical center certified to dispense the drug, which is taken on a daily basis in liquid or pill form. The cost of the med is approximately $150 a month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based med, and is a pill often taken every other day. But different from Methadone that can only be administered in well-regulated medical centers, Buprenorphine can be and is prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is around $300.00 a month for the generic version of the medication. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, that is a drug which reverses the effects of opiates. A person taking this formulation, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It too is taken every day, and is priced about $450 a month. Naltrexone is another medication taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications aforementioned it is an opiate blocker and is not an opioid. There is an option to take this medication as a monthly shot, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents an individual from feeling high from opioids, and therefore lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily injection costs in the range of $1000 to $1200 a month.
