Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Charleston, TN.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the drug Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to start Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of a rehab program in Charleston which also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
