Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Hillsboro, TN.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Hillsboro that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
