Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Lenox, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Lenox which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
