Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehab Programs - Mc Ewen, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug dependency and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which one can get via injection once a month. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or takes opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Mc Ewen that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological aids can help you live the sober life you want.
