Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Programs - Milton, TN.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone takes a drink of alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for several years, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Milton which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you live the sober life you want.
