Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Centers - Allen, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the medication Naltrexone, that one can get through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone injects Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, an individual who plans to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These drugs must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Allen that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological aids can help you build the drug-free life you want.
