Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehab Programs - Allison, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via injection once a month. It is not addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to begin Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking drugs like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a treatment program in Allison that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build the sober life you want.
