Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Alvin, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol dependency and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the medication Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including individuals who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs like Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Alvin which also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Talk to your therapist or doctor about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug and alcohol free life you want.
