Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Centers - Anna, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, that one can get via a monthly injection. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are particular safety measures that should be be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who plans to start Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for at least seven to ten days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given drugs such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or someone who has been taking Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Anna which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the sober life you want.
