Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Facilities - Art, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release type of the med Naltrexone, which one can get through injection once a month. It is not habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would normally be activated by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or takes opioids they basically can't get high or drunk.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, a person who plans to begin Vivitrol needs to have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking medications such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or someone who has been on Methadone for several years, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a rehab program in Art that also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug-free life you want.
