Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Treatment Facilities - Avery, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug mainly administered to help prevent drug use and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used as part of a rehab program in Avery which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk to your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you live the drug and alcohol free life you want.
