There are substance abuse programs available in or near Bayou Vista which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, controlled medications which are administered in what is known as opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are activated by these two drugs so therefore an opioid addicted client will ideally no longer become involved in drug seeking behavior and won't have cravings and withdrawal. There are risks of side effects, drug interactions, and even addiction and overdose with both methadone and buprenorphine, which is why they are highly regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Methadone and buprenorphine clients take these medications consistently so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't at the same time causing them to feel euphoria. Euphoria can be experienced at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At programs that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, actual rehabilitation activities and therapies are limited beyond managing the medication and the primary treatment goal is to manage the physical symptoms of their dependence. Some clinics do deliver a limited amount of counseling and group therapy as supplementary treatment, and it is recommended and encouraged.
