There are programs offered in or near Beaumont which service both methadone and buprenorphine clients only, drugs which are administered in what is called opioid maintenance therapy. Methadone is a full opioid agonist the same as heroin, and buprenorphine is a partial agonist, meaning the same neural receptors that make a person feel high from morphine or heroin are stimulated by these two drugs so therefore an opiate dependent client will ideally no longer become involved in addict behavior and won't experience withdrawal symptoms. There are dangers with drug interactions, side effects, and even addiction and overdose with both buprenorphine and methadone, which is why they are heavily regulated and can only be dispensed in a clinical setting.
Buprenorphine and methadone clients take these medications daily so they don't experience cravings, withdrawal, etc. but hopefully at a dosage which isn't also making them feel high. Euphoria occurs at at higher dosages, more so with methadone than buprenorphine. At clinics that treat methadone and buprenorphine clients only, treatment therapies are limited beyond this and the main treatment objective is to address the withdrawal symptoms and put an end to the illicit drug use. Some programs do offer a limited amount of counseling and therapy as supplementary treatment, and this is recommended and encouraged.
