Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Facilities - Bellaire, TX.

Vivitrol is a med used to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is administered specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the medication Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol needs to have abstained from opioids for a minimum of 7-10 days. This includes clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week in order to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of a rehab program in Bellaire that also offers individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Talk with your therapist or Dr. about how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
