Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Programs - Big Bend National Park, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription pain killers. Vivitrol is an extended release type of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone takes Vivitrol, it cuts off the receptors that would usually be triggered by opioids or alcohol, so when an individual drinks alcohol or takes opioids they essentially cannot get high or drunk.

There are particular safety measures that need to be taken before an individual is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a client who intends to start Vivitrol must have abstained from opioids for at least 7-10 days. This is including clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Buprenorphine or Methadone. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly can be very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These meds must be used in conjunction with an addiction treatment program in Big Bend National Park that also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist about how pharmacological tools can help you maintain and build the drug-free life you want.
