Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Facilities - Blue Ridge, TX.

Vivitrol is a drug used to prevent drug or alcohol abuse and relapse, and is administered expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended release version of the drug Naltrexone, that is available via a monthly injection. It isn't habit forming, and is what is called an antagonist. When someone is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks alcohol or takes opioids they basically cannot get drunk or high.

There are certain precautions that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. First off, someone who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This includes people who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin addict or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation is brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for a minimum of seven days in order to begin taking Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Blue Ridge which also includes individual therapy, group therapy and medical supervision. Speak to your therapist or Dr. in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug and alcohol free life you want.
