Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Drug and Alcohol Treatment Programs - Carthage, TX.

Vivitrol is a med mainly administered to prevent drug abuse and relapse, and is used expressly for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the med Naltrexone, which is available through a monthly injection. It isn't addictive, and is what is known as an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would usually be activated by opioids or alcohol, so when someone drinks or tries to get high on opioids they essentially can't get drunk or high.

There are particular precautions that need to be taken before someone is administered Vivitrol. Firstly, a person who with the intent to begin Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for a minimum of seven to ten days. This is including clients who are participating in opioid maintenance therapy and are taking meds like Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or a person who has been on Methadone for a long time, quitting quickly is very difficult, but withdrawal is something they will have to go through for at least a week if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used in conjunction with a treatment program in Carthage which also includes medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak to your therapist or doctor in regards to how pharmacological tools can help you build the drug-free life you want.
