Vivitrol Used in Treatment - Alcohol and Drug Rehabilitation Centers - Chico, TX.

Vivitrol is a medication mainly administered to help prevent drug or alcohol use and relapse, and is used specifically for alcohol and opioid drugs such as heroin and prescription medications. Vivitrol is an extended-release version of the drug Naltrexone, which one can get via a monthly injection. It is not addictive, and is what is called an antagonist. When an individual is adminstered Vivitrol, it blocks the receptors that would normally be triggered by alcohol or opioids, so when an individual drinks or tries to get high on opioids they basically can't get drunk or high.

There are certain safety measures that need to be taken before an individual begins treatment with Vivitrol. Firstly, someone who with the intent to start Vivitrol must have been off of opioids for at least 7-10 days. This includes clients who are involved in opioid maintenance therapy and are being given meds such as Methadone or Buprenorphine. For a heroin abuser or someone who has been taking Methadone for a long time, abrupt cessation can be brutal, but withdrawal is something they will have to endure for a minimum of 7 days if they want to start Vivitrol.

These medications must be used as part of an addiction treatment program in Chico that also offers medical supervision, individual therapy, and group therapy. Speak with your doctor or therapist in regards to how pharmacological aids can help you build and maintain the drug-free life you want.
