One of the out-patient rehab alternatives for people in China struggling with opioid dependence and addiction is called opioid maintenance therapy. Some facilities and doctors are certified to administer certain medications to opioid addicted clients, many that are opioids also and are addiction. With low doses however, the user doesn't feel high but also doesn't experience intense cravings and is not in opioid withdrawal. Methadone is the first med administered for this reason, but there are a few more choices currently to select from.
Methadone is an opiate and is meant to be taken at an outpatient medical center certified to administer the drug, which is taken daily in liquid or pill form. The cost of the med is around $150 per month. Buprenorphine is also an opiate based drug, and is in pill form often taken every other day. But unlike Methadone that can only be administered in structured medical centers, Buprenorphine can be prescribed and dispensed in doctor's offices. The cost monthly of buprenorphine is about $300 a month for the generic version of the drug. There is also a version of buprenorphine that contains the ingredient naloxone, which is a drug which blocks the effects of opioids. An individual consuming this version of the drug, also known as Suboxone, would find it harder to get high from opioids if they relapsed while taking the drug. It is also taken on a daily basis, and costs about $450 monthly. Naltrexone is an additional med taken in opioid maintenance therapy, but unlike the other medications mentioned here it is an opioid blocker and isn't an opiate. A person has the choice to take this medication as a monthly injection, which is called Vivitrol. As an opioid blocker, the drug prevents a person from experience being high from opioids, and in turn lowers the risk associated with relapse. This daily shot costs anywhere from $1000 to $1200 monthly.
